how many times in the last 2 yrs has this subject reared its ugly head, those that dont have to get up and milk cows in the morning will always want to influence the decision making. After all what they say is quite correct. none of us want the decline in fertility to continue but at the same time i need the bulk tank full NOW . Word was that some at the breeders meeting recently in Guernsey thought that we should use negative milk bulls to try and arrest the decline ,how rediculous is that, most if not all the Gy farmers have a constant battle each year to get enough land to keep with in the stocking rate restrictions, lower yields = either less milk in the tank or more cows too compensate. Some of the 2nd/3rd calvers are doing upwards of 8500+litres one and half times the national average yield for the breed yet the management isn't one and half times better. As long as they get incalf not when is the important bit. If the powers that be insist on this mission fine just scrap the GMI all together and use PLI it ALREADY HAS FERTILITY BUILT INTO IT.
