Thank you for your comments,it does illustrate the difficulties that occur when trying to produce a Guernsey to suit all management systems. Our major problem in the UK, is to maintain our cow numbers and to do that we need "new" owners of Guernseys and most of these will have had experience of other dairy breeds, most of which are more productive as a result of the demands of the UK milk market which demands ever cheeaper milk and milk products for a relatively affluent consumer. Milk and bread are used as "loss leaders" by the dominant supermarkets.
The few Guernsey herd owners who are selling their produce direct and thus earn a better price are probably better able to change the type of cow that they milk, but the majority are seeking increased production to stay in business.
